The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the most unique joint in the whole body as it is two joints in one. The two joints, one on each side of the head, are connected by the jawbone.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by an airway blockage (obstruction) during sleep. During the day, muscles in the airway region keep the throat and airway passage wide open but when a patient has OSA, the throat collapses during sleep, blocking the airway and preventing air from getting to the lungs. OSA is dangerous and should not to be ignored at any age. OSA can often be treated with an oral appliance.
Muscles, when in extreme tension from hyperactivity as a defense to sleep breathing and/or structural issues, can cause pain. Headaches are usually from muscle pain and are often accompanied by neck, back and shoulder pain.
