According to the guidelines of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, it is estimated that 40% to 75% of the population has at least one sign (e.g., clicking jaw) of a TMJ disorder and 33% of the population has reported at least one symptom (e.g., pain) related to a TMJ disorder.
Women are eight times more likely than men to have a TMJ disorder. It is experienced mostly by women between the ages of 20 and 54, and pain usually begins after puberty.
Only 5% to 10% of adults with a TMJ disorder require treatment.
