Understanding TMJ Prevalence: Who is Affected and Why

According to the guidelines of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, TMJ disorders are more common than many realize. Studies suggest that 40% to 75% of the population exhibits at least one sign of a TMJ disorder, such as a clicking jaw, while 33% have reported experiencing at least one symptom, such as pain, directly related to the condition. These statistics underscore just how prevalent TMJ issues are, even among those who may not seek immediate treatment.

Interestingly, TMJ disorders disproportionately affect women. Women are eight times more likely than men to develop a TMJ disorder, with the majority of cases occurring between the ages of 20 and 54. The onset of pain often coincides with hormonal changes after puberty, suggesting a potential link between hormones and TMJ disorders. Despite these widespread signs and symptoms, only 5% to 10% of adults with TMJ disorders require treatment, highlighting the importance of accurate diagnosis and appropriate care for those whose condition significantly impacts their quality of life. At the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of the Greater Toronto Area, we are committed to helping individuals understand and manage their TMJ symptoms effectively.
