TMJ Clicking
Jaw Clicking FAQ – TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of the Greater Toronto Area
Q. What causes jaw clicking?
A. Jaw clicking is often caused by irregular movement in the temporomandibular joint. When the jaw joint or the cushioning disc shifts out of place, it may create a clicking sound in the jaw during chewing, talking, or yawning.
Q. Is TMJ clicking the same as jaw popping?
A. TMJ clicking and popping are closely related. Both can occur when the joint is not moving smoothly. Some patients notice clicking popping jaw sensations, especially when opening the mouth wider than normal.
Q. Why do I feel jaw ear clicking or clicking near my ear?
A. The TMJ sits very close to the ear canal, which is why some patients experience jaw ear clicking or a clicking of jaw by ear. The sound may feel like it is coming from the ear, even though it is usually the jaw joint.
Q. Can jaw clicking lead to locking or limited movement?
A. In some cases, jaw clicking and locking can occur if the joint becomes inflamed or the disc movement worsens. If your jaw feels stuck or difficult to open fully, it may be helpful to seek an evaluation.
Q. How to fix TMJ clicking and improve comfort?
A. Many patients ask how to fix TMJ clicking. Treatment depends on the cause, but may include oral appliances, jaw muscle therapy, habit changes, and guided care to reduce strain on the joint. Dr. Goodfellow provides individualized recommendations based on your symptoms.
Q. What options are available for jaw clicking treatment?
A. Jaw clicking treatment may involve conservative approaches such as bite support, exercises, and TMJ-focused therapies to improve jaw function. Early care can often help reduce clicking and prevent worsening discomfort.
